As Mt. Hood Community College’s fall quarter begins today, students and staff are being welcomed with something that Student Events and Center Coordinator Meadow McWhorter calls an “awesome idea” for the first day back: pancakes.

President John Sygielski speaks to instructors and students at the orientation after giving his welcome speech.

Welcome Week, a three-day celebration for new and returning students, features free pancakes from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. today.
“I’m really looking forward to the pancakes,” said McWhorter. “I think it’s a great way to get the school year started.”

McWhorter said she and Holly Corbitt, a Student Activities Board member, worked all summer to put together a good Welcome Week for the students.

“Last year I took my position in September, so I didn’t really get a chance to help organize (Welcome Week),” said McWhorter. “It was a surprisingly easy process, though, and a lot of fun. Holly is great to work with.”

Students are given tours around the campus.

The celebration will continue Tuesday, as MHCC will host 17 vendors from several local businesses in the Main Mall. Such businesses include Next Adventure, Team Quest, Best Buy and several banks. Also on the itinerary are games, prizes, and free grilled cheese sandwiches between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

“The vendors will be there to market, but they usually give out free stuff to the students as well,” said McWhorter. “The games will be fun. We’ll have a Velcro wall, an obstacle course and a few other fun things between Tuesday and Wednesday.”

Wednesday will also feature performances from the band Rootdown, who performed during New Student Orientation last week. All 22 MHCC clubs will be present, including the recreated Asian Club and Black Student Union. Games, free hot dogs and ice cream will be given from noon to 2 p.m.
McWhorter said anyone seeking more information about Welcome Week, or anything having to do with student activities, should contact her in her office at (503) 491-7269.
