'Mix It Up' encourages diversity

“Mix it up” is a multi-cultural mixer that will be held by the Student Activities Board Monday in the College Center
The intention of the mixer is to encourage more interaction between different people from different cultures, according to Marketing Coordinator Nadia Ruiz, who is helping to coordinate the event.
There will be food and drink as well as entertainment from MHCC based performers. There will be dance performances from the CASS and IALS programs, as well as a performance from singer/songwriter and MHCC student Romeo Diahn.
When they arrive, students will be given a number, which will dictate which table they sit at. The point of the assigned seating, according to Ruiz, is to encourage breaking up predefined groups.
“With a lot of students here, we have cliques; we’re just trying to break down the cliques,” said Collin Miller, the Season Events Coordinator.
At each table there will be a container full of random questions that explore various aspects of different cultures, such as “How do you say hello in your native language?”
“The point of the event is for everyone to realize how much of a diverse campus MHCC is, as well as to learn something about a culture that is not their own,” said Miller.
