The Saints softball team will play inter-squad games Saturday during what is called Black & Red Day.

Head Coach Meadow McWhorter said, “It is a fun day for our athletes and a way for them to compete in a variety of different games.”

The team will play games such as kickball and dodgeball, McWhorter said.
Last weekend the Saints played at Erv Lind Stadium in Portland against Concordia University, Blue Mountain Community College and Portland State University.

“I was pleased with our performance all weekend in the PSU tourney. The games against Portland State were productive,” said McWhorter. “We made adjustments at the plate and they were aggressive. Facing pitchers of PSU’s caliber is an excellent challenge to see where we are offensively. We will not face better pitching in the NWAACC, so it gives the team an extra boost of confidence when (they) perform like we did on Sunday.”

The MHCC pitchers are all freshmen and, according to McWhorter, they held their own against PSU.

“I was pleased with their poise on the mound. If they were nervous or scared, they didn’t show it,” she said.

The team has struggled with injuries this fall, according to McWhorter. Mai Gallusha is now cleared to play, but Sarah McGregor and Ari VanHorn are both out until January.

Not playing during fallball could potentially cost them a spot on the team but according to McWhorter, everyone on the team is a good fit.

“This group of young ladies have really meshed in such a short period of time,” she said. “I really credit our sophomore leadership for this. This group of returners is driven, accountable and enthusiastic.”
