The James F. and Marion L. Miller Scholarship has been awarded to 42 students at MHCC under a program where that foundation matches funds raised by the college foundation.
“We received matching funds of $120,000 last year and this coming year we want to raise the same amount or try to get even more matching funds,” said Sunny Klever, MHCC Foundation coordinator.
The Miller Foundation was established in 2002 and is a independent private organization dedicated to enhancing support of the arts and education.
Throughout the state, many community colleges receive the Miller scholarships. Students are eligible for $500-$3,000 depending on their financial need.
“Students did have to apply thru the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA) form, be awarded aid, and have financial need to be eligible for this scholarship according to the donor’s criteria,” said Christi Hart, director of the MHCC Financial Aid Office.
Klever said the generosity of the Miller Foundation has been such a huge help to the college and especially to the students who really need it. She said with the economy in crisis, this is a good help to students.
“I believe this scholarship made the difference for some students to be able to continue to pursue their goal of a college education.
Students have been so appreciative and thankful for the support from the James F. and Marion L. Miller Scholarship,” said Hart.
