The Lady Saints are back in full form staying undefeated in conference play after three wins last week with the most recent match against the Linn-Benton Roadrunners Wednesday.
The Saints won the match in three straight sets winning 25-21, 25-17 and 25-16.
In the first set, the Saints jumped out to an early lead in the first set and never looked back. After the quick first set win, the lady Saints had to fight back after going down early in sets two and three.
“I was happy with how we played,” said Head Coach Chelsie Freeman. “After having to come back in sets two and three in the beginning was awesome.”
Strong performances turned in once again came from freshman Kyra Speer who had a game high of 15 kills while freshman Jaci Chew-Dorsey had 11 kills and hit .409 for the Lady Saints.
“Taylor (Canoso) also had an awesome match for us,” said Freeman. Conoso had her best match of the season with 12 assists and had seven digs. Also helping out the Lady saints was freshman Esmeralda Orozco had 24 assists and seven digs.
Another excellent part of the match in Freeman’s eyes were in Monday’s practice after middle blocker Mackenzie Hodges rolled her ankle and freshman Jazmin Orozco filled in who normally plays outside hitter for the Saints.
“I am happy we have stayed undefeated it is a great feeling, but we still have more games to play,” said Freeman.
Last Friday, the Saints went to Roseburg and competed against the Umpqua Riverhawks winning in three sets 25-18,25-17 ,25-17. On Saturday, the women faced off against Southwestern Oregon Community College also winning in three sets 25-23,25-20, 25-18.
“It was good to get those wins,” said Freeman. “Considering the week we had before with everyone being so sick.”
Freeman also said even with the win, the women looked out of sync on the court. “They looked exhausted because they couldn’t practice. The flow of how we play the game was off. These games came down to us being mentally tough.”
This weekend, the Saints host the Dorian Harris Halloween Classic today and tomorrow. The Saints kick off round robin play at 2 p.m. Friday with matches also at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. After round robin play, the tournament will kick off Saturday morning with the first match starting at 9 a.m.
“It’s gonna be tough,” said Freeman. “This is our last tournament before NWAACCs. I hope we understand that the tournament is preparing us for the NWAACC tournament.”
