November board meeting falls on Veterans' Day

The MHCC District board will hold its regular meeting on the second Wednesday of November – the usual day for a board meeting – even though this one falls on Veterans’ Day, a national holiday.
“The board decided a couple of months ago they wanted to go ahead and meet on Nov. 11,” said June Jacobs, assistant to the president for strategic initiatives and board relations. “It was their decision. They felt it important to keep the consistency of meeting the second Wednesday of the month.”
oshua Ray, the president of the Veterans’ Association at MHCC, said he is not offended by the decision.
“If they have to work, we might as well let them do their jobs,” said Ray. “It would be nice if maybe they said something about appreciating veterans to start the meeting – show their appreciation somehow – but I have no problem with it. Veterans don’t get a day off.”
Jacobs said she hadn’t heard of anyone — staff or students — being offended by the decision to run a meeting on a national holiday.
“I don’t think the board realized it was Veterans’ Day in the first place,” said Jacobs. “And I know they didn’t mean to offend anyone.”
Nick Leizen, director of Student Organization Council, is a veteran who said he did not feel offended by the decision either.
“It doesn’t bother me,” said Leizen. “They have to do what they have to do. Some people get the day off, some people don’t.”
The board dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 7 in either the Town and Gown Room or the Bob Scott Room in the library. The business portion of the meeting will begin at 7 p.m. The location had not been determined at press time.
