Instructors can connect to all parts of the college with the COLE

The Community of Learners Enterprise (COLE) encourages “professional development for all employees and students as well,” according to Wendy Schissel, associate vice president of instruction.
COLE is a resource for faculty members at MHCC to learn from each other and become better instructors. Until this year, MHCC had a program called the Teaching and Learning Cooperative (TLC).
This was for teachers to learn from each other as well as from national research on what the best practices were in instruction, said Schissel.
“The successes of the former TLC for faculty seed this enterprise and faculty will continue under COLE to be students of teaching.
But COLE is more broad in its attempt to inspire the entire college community to partake in meaningful professional development,” said Schissel.
COLE will use the same room that the TLC used. It is being refurbished and equipped with new “dual platform computers,” Schissel said.
The change was made from TLC to COLE because although the teachers here have the same mission to serve the students, they were not all working with the other areas of the college, according to Schissel.
“In reality, we have much to learn from each other and more yet to learn from national best practices in all areas that put students at the center of the college's mission of transforming lives (and) building communities,” she said.
COLE will also contribute to MHCC’s goal of engaging communities, according to Schissel, because by learning from colleges elsewhere and working together within the MHCC community, COLE will become a “new way of facilitating professional development.”
