Rho Theta gives ‘opportunities’

Being a member of Rho Theta is like having a piece of gold in your pocket.

“It’s fun,” said Beth Sammons, the MHCC Rho Theta adviser. “It looks good on any resume and can provide students with many scholarship opportunities not open to other students worth thousands of dollars. Plus it is a good way to volunteer.”

For all of the hard work throughout the tear, the Rho Theta honor society also has been having fun, Sammons said — and the students were recently rewarded for their work.

During the Rocky Mountain-Cascade regional convention May 2 for the honor society, Mt. Hood’s chapter received honors many other community college chapters did not.

“One of our awards was receiving a four-star status out of the Five Star Chapter development program,” said Sammons.

How many stars a chapter receives is determined by how large your chapter is, if it still going after more than a year and what you do to help your community, according to Sammons.

Other awards Rho Theta received include: the Scholarship Milestone Award for improvement on the society’s scholarship program; an award for scholarship programming related to the honors study topic which is “The Paradox of Affluence”; for mentoring/ tutoring activities; and an award for the leadership program that developed officers as leaders and forged connections on campus and with the community.

To join the club, students need to be in good standing with the school with at least12 credits earned and a GPA of 3.5.

“When you qualify, you get a brochure and application sent to your house to sign

up,” said Sammons.
There is a $75 membership fee, which provides a lifetime membership to Rho Theta. “Instead of paying the full $75, the MHCC District pays $15 of your one-time fee,” Sammons said. Once a student becomes a member, they can apply to be an officer.

If any student is interested in volunteering for a chapter activity, there are upcoming dates that Sammons said she would love for others to help.

“We have a couple of big projects coming up,” said Sammons. “Onjalai Flake (the club’s vice president of services), is planning a Park Planting Community Garden in Vance Park on May 30.”

For more information on Rho Theta, on how to join or volunteer, contact Sammons at 503-491-7177 or go to an officer meeting in the Lake Room in the College Center on Tuesdays at noon.
