Negative responses to election outcome prove childish, bitter
The 2009 Associated Student Government (ASG) election is now in the books and the time for childish bickering and gibberish should be finished. Hopefully by next week it will wind down entirely, but there appears to be significant fallout that threatens to sabotage the term of President-elect Bradley Best and Vice President-elect L. John King.
Start with the callow creation of a Facebook group called “Lets-all-watch-Bradley-Best-ruin ASG.” This is the sort of thing one would expect to be rampant at an elementary or middle school level, as college is supposed to be the point when a person rises above the pouting and makes their ascent into adulthood. The mandate of the Facebook group reads, “In this gentle forum we can mourn the loss of his constant ‘likes’ to our statuses and celebrate his Ballistic APPROACH to spelling, Capitalization, a,nd puncturation (sic).” The group goes on to say that they would enjoy watching Best’s “train wreck” of a year in office.
Best is a genuinely nice guy that doesn’t deserve this. Thinking he is not qualified to serve as ASG president or disliking his platform is one thing, but making fun of a good person is shallow and cold-blooded.
Former ASG Sen. Ryan Lerud’s comments on Director of the Student Activities Board Heather Nichelle-Peres’ profile, including the statement that Best must have cheated because he won by so many votes, is another ridiculous item; there is no way, just no way, that Best could possibly have gotten the most votes legally?
Lerud writes that he is “waiting to hear something about how Mr. Best assaulted someone on campus or did some other horrendous action that justifies being kicked out of school!”
The comments were encouraged when Nichelle-Peres left a status comment on her Facebook profile that said “How can you accept a job overseeing $100,000 of student fees and then walk in the office and say you have no idea what your doing?”
Lerud responded with, “The same reason (Director of Student Life Robert) Cox still has a job.”
Perhaps most troubling are Jennifer Rogers’ comments. Rogers, the head of the non-partisan – key words being “non-partisan” – Elections Committee, left several comments on Nichelle-Peres’ profile, including, “We know who we want, even if we didn’t get her!!”
Good luck, Mr. Best. You have a lot of house cleaning to do.
