‘Rites of Spring’ hits the beach
The Advocate
MHCC’s annual “Rites of Spring” will fill the Main Mall Monday through Thursday with food, games and concerts.
This year’s performances will include Centrevol on Monday, Debra Arlyn on Tuesday and Jonathan Kingham on Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Main Mall, weather permitting.
“So far the weather forecast looks good for next week,” said Mooney.
Lady Danville will be perform May 20 from 3 to 5 p.m. and My Mental Island will play Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m.
There will be food and games all week to match the “Be a beach bum” theme of this year’s “Rites of Spring.”
Mooney said SAB thought of the theme when they were looking at the simplicity of the foods and the quality of the artists and realized that is kind of like being a beach bum.
“It’s about being simple and having fun,” she said.
The “Be a beach bum” scene in the College Center will be moved to the Main Mall, depending on weather, for the “Rites of Spring” celebrations.
Nachos will be served Monday, Mexi-style corn on the cob on Tuesday, the Wednesday morning show will have corn dogs and the night show will have watermelon, all served with raspberry lemonade.
Thursday’s event will be held in the field behind the Game Room, near the pond and fire pit; s’mores will be offered that day.
“Its one of the year’s biggest events,” Mooney said, “next to the Spring Dinner Dance.”
“Rites of Spring” is paid for by student fees and cost about $6,800 this year, about half of last year’s costs, according to Mooney.
“We’re trying to make everything cost effective this year,” Mooney said. “It’s a much more low-key event than last year and the economy did come into play. It was very tricky but we made it work.”
