Artist explores 'silly' side of suburbia

The Visual Arts Gallery at Mt. Hood Community College will be exhibiting video, photography and sculpture by Gabriel Brown in his exhibit, “Great Tasting Goodness,” Oct. 26 through Nov. 24.
A public reception will be Thursday, Nov. 5, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Nathan Orosco, Visual Arts Gallery coordinator and MHCC sculpture instructor, said this is a traveling show, coming from the Museum of Arts and Culture in Spokane, Wash., but this exhibit is “going to be different (for MHCC) because we have more space.”
Brown, a Spokane artist, said in a press release, “I spend a great deal of time exploring this city, walking, driving, collecting objects, taking photographs and dumpster diving.
The five projects included in the show are about the relationships between consumerism, suburban sprawl and economic disparity.” But, he added, “I’ve made them silly on purpose. Life is silly. And yes, even suburban sprawl is kinda silly.”
Orosco said Brown was his student in the bachelor of fine arts program at Eastern Washington University.
“Now he’s off and running,” said Orosco.
