Lightning strike ruins Black and Red Day

MHCC’s softball team played this year’s inter-squad games in the rain, until lightning forced cancellation of the remaining two of four games.

The purpose of Saturday’s games was to challenge the team to play different sports and to still effectively work together as a team.

“The main goal for us today is for it to be a team-building day. It’s to take them out of their sport and be able to compete in different sports and build that team camaraderie,” said head coach Meadow McWhorter during the inter-squad games.

The team met on the football field at 10 a.m. dressed in black and red attire, and were excited to play this year’s inter-squad games. The games were to feature soccer, relay races, kickball and capture the flag.

The team started with soccer and then held relay races. However, the rain persisted and then the lightning stopped the activities.

On Saturday the softball team will travel to Oregon State University to play College of the Redwoods at 9 a.m., Grays Harbor at 10:30 a.m., and OSU at 3 p.m.

“We’re very young but we have a core group of returners,” said McWhorter.

“Right now we have twelve freshmen and seven sophomores. Out of the group that won the title last year, we have our entire outfield returning, we have our second baseman returning and we have our starting catcher returning.

“The pitching staff is all new but I’m really excited about our pitching staff because all three freshmen pitchers have played with competitive summer ball programs (and) very successful high school programs. We have a sophomore pitcher who is transferring from Bakersfield, Calif., and she adds that experience we need. We’re really excited.”
