Cross country improves at Mike Hodges Invitational

The MHCC cross country teams competed at the Mike Hodges Invite last Friday at Clackamas Community College, which will be the same course as the Southern Region Championship Oct. 31.

“The weather was nice and the competition was fierce,” said cross country team member Andrea Dittmer.

Assistant coach Keith Maneval said, “We had some fine performances in our last meet. Our top four men ran real close together and they all posted season bests at the four-mile (race). Our women’s team is coming along nicely and we’re preparing for a strong showing at Southern Regions.”

Slavic Ishenin was the first MHCC athlete to finish the men’s meet with a time of 22:45 on the four-mile race. Matt Romey, Bobby Ellis and Wes Hughes all finished within 25 seconds of Ishenin.

The women’s 5K was won by Anna Kesselring from the University of Oregon with a time of 17:51. The first MHCC athlete to cross the finish line was Aamanda Faggard with a time of 20:02.

Head coach Matt Hart said, “They performed well.”
Maneval said, “The course at Clackamas CC is fairly flat and we tend to run well on it. Knowing the course is advantageous to us competing well at the Southern Region Championships.”

Hart said, “It allows the athletes to familiarize themselves with the course so they can learn the various nuances of the course. When they run the course again at Southern Region Championships, they will have a better understanding of the various distances to the loops, the hazards and the landmarks.”

Dittmer said, “You know what to expect when you’re going to hit the wall and how to prepare yourself really well.”
