MHCC has acquired 169 pieces of artwork over the years, ranging from intricate paintings to quilt art, and all of them are available for checkout by college staff.

There are some pieces that must be placed in a public area, such as display of the college’s first flag.

According to established guidelines, “We allow college personnel to check out any artwork they see and request that it be hung in a public space or on college premises, said Diane Schmitt, library manager of access services, but “that doesn’t mean it can’t be in someone’s office, because it can be.”

An email regarding access to the artwork was recently was sent to all staff by Schmitt, with permission of Library Director Nancy Szofran.

There is a limit of three pieces per person, and they may keep the pieces for 180 days. Then the artwork will be collected and made ready for redistribution.
Schmitt said the college has the right to recall an item for instructional purposes.

Of the 169 pieces, all but about 15 are checked out.  “We have checked out the majority of the college artwork, which is a really good thing for us,” said Schmitt.

“These are the rules,” said Schmitt.  “All they do is email me.  They create a work order, and I have it sent to them.”

All of the college’s artwork has been photographed, inventoried and added to the library catalog, and it has all been insured.

The artwork can also be found on the Flicker website.

The artwork found on Flicker “is the entire (collection of) college artwork as you see it,” Schmitt said.
