Finance council discusses fee increase

The Associated Student Government Finance Council held its first meeting of 2010 Tuesday to introduce new members and begin discussing budgets for the 2010-2011 fiscal year.

Among the council were new faces from Forensics, Perceptions, the Student Activities Board, Associated Student Government and members from other student organizations.

One change the council focused on was increasing student fees by 20 percent, which would raise fees from $2.50 to $3 per credit hour.

“We’re looking into whether it would be necessary,” said Rae Peres, the ASG director of finance. “We’re also looking for student feedback on the issue.”

The raise in student fees is something that will be up for more discussion as council members relay impressions from the student body.

Peres also said they are trying to develop some ideas for increased revenue from increased enrollment.

“With this extra revenue we’re not sure yet if we want to allocate it to programs that have been waiting awhile or put it into a separate contingency in case something happens later in the year,” said Peres.

The council is looking for student feedback on where the money should go. Peres encourages students to reach her with ideas, which they can drop off in her mailbox in the College Center or send to her e-mail at [email protected].

The finance council meetings are open to the public and if students would like to attend, they are held in the College Center from 8 to 10 a.m. Tuesdays for co-curricular meetings and 4 to 6 p.m. Thursdays for athletics in the College Center.
