MHCC web team preparing for redesign

The MHCC web team is rewriting the infrastructure of the college website in preparation for designing a new site next month.

The college website was created a few years ago on a contract with computer software and service company Collegis but that contract recently expired, the college is switching to a new system called Ektron.

The switch requires the team, consisting of Mitch Klink, Shannon Montgomery and Gary Novak, to learn Ektron, as well as to recode and convert more than 5,000 files within the website.

The Collegis system effectively tied the hands of the school regarding changes to the site, as any updates that were needed had to go through Collegis, which took time and limited the range of possible changes, said Klink. “If we wanted something changed or updated, we had to fill out a form and send it to Collegis.”
With the new system, the web team will have direct access to the code of the site, allowing them to provide ongoing support and maintenance, according to an e-mail sent to staff by Chief Information Officer Michael Hay.

The switch will take place toward the end of February.

Until then, the site will look and function the same way as it has.
However, switching to this new system puts the college in a position to begin work on designing a new site sometime in the future, according to Hay’s e-mail.
