Mr. Hadnot

Marcus Hadnot

Marcus Hadnot can be found on campus behind the counter at the Sub Station in the Vista Dining Center — but that’s his day job. He’s also founder of MacEm’ Productions, a recording company that creates rap, hip-hop and R&B beats.

“Right now we are working on recording a song called ‘Tell Me,’ ” by Tiffany Banger, Hadnot said. “We are done with the beats.”

Hadnot produces the beats along with his friends “Solo” and “Philliest.” “This all started when we were snowed in last winter,” he said. “It was just me. Now I have two of my friends helping me produce.”

He began by posting beats on his MySpace music page. “We started with one beat, had a good response, and decided that’s what we should do. We continued to post more beats,” building a fan base, he said. “Right now we have about seven beats up there and a remix. We just hit more than 10,000 plays. It’s exciting to know your beats and songs have been played more than 10,000 times.”

Hadnot said putting together beats is frustrating, but he has the ability to make it happen. “Being able to put a beat together takes patience, hard work and you have to have fun,” said Hadnot. “As long as you’re having fun, you’ll be alright.” He said it’s a long process. “You start with all of these sounds, record the melody, do the verse, and give it a twist at the end to make people say, ‘Oh.’”

Hadnot said he is inspired by producers Timbaland and The Runners, and artists L’il Wayne, Young Jeezy and T-Pain.

Hadnot said wants MacEm’ Productions to be a full recording studio in five years. He said he plans on getting “more equipment that we need; you can never have enough equipment.” He said, “My short term goals are to produce many tracks, and get fans to follow us on MySpace and give us support.”

Asked what he enjoys about the industry, Hadnot said, “I love meeting all types of artists and I love to travel — and with music you travel a lot.” He said he and his co-producers are planning a trip to Los Angeles as soon as possible. As for what he dislikes about the industry, he said, “There’s a lot of beef, a lot of tension between rappers and singers.” He also said, “It’s difficult trying to get your name out there.”

In his free time, Hadnot said, “I like to just sit down and listen to music and different artists, and go to the club once in a while. Hopefully they’ll be playing what we produce at the clubs.”

Hadnot said he plans on taking video production at MHCC so he can create music videos in the future.
